Connah/Grayson/Wonfor THE BEAR LIES DOWN The bear lies down and the
world exhales She’s out the door that
she kicked and dented "Take her out and make her
laugh and be like me" The bear lies down and the
world exhales The bear lies down and the
earth is quiet No symphony of grieving © 2003
Connah/Grayson/Wonfor WATCHSTAR See the star in the northern sky It’s the watchstar of the years and it’s not about to die on us Come all ye faithless, all ye don’t know why Let the star stay the tears for a while I don’t know how to ease any pain So I’ll not sing it out like I think you’re the same as me One world between us until we believe In the star and the gift of reprieve Look to the north when the watchstar awakes Gather of your soul from the light-years away While the wind turns the world to a time yet undone And the star sends you back to the sun Oh come all ye faithless Joyless and defeated © 2004 Connah/Grayson/Wonfor THE BINDLEY TREE The Christmas tree took root and grew several storeys high It pushed the walls of Betty's house a little out of line Councillor Hall made a courtesy call with a view to cut it down The smile that graced Betty's face was replaced with a cold stare and a frown "That tree is like a child to me, you must not do her wrong She grew up with my family and this is where she belongs." But four and twenty men were sent to do the will of Hall With their axes honed and all intent to see that timber fall But Betty had braved her needled boughs and branches right to the top Like an angel calling down from above she said "I swear I'll make you stop. This tree you see is a part of me, I will not let her down; She grew up with my children and I will not desert her now. You can all debate, deliberate, quibble and confer But you will not lay a finger on my conifer!" Well the winter came and the cracks appeared in Betty Bindley's house And the Councillor sneered, kind of cavalier, "There's no point in trying to get her out" Well it sounded just like thunder when the walls came crashing down Councillor Hall washed his hands of it all And Betty was never found Now that conifer is a shrine to her, standing to this day They light her up in December and they dance around her in May While some may call her the Bindley Tree, others wonder why But they say that the breeze as it blows through her leaves sounds like Betty's cries © 2004 Connah/Grayson/Wonfor THE BREAKING I don't think that you know what you've done Breaking the one thing we could become I don't think that you know the score I don't believe in you anymore So go my friend Unhappy ending unassuaged Look alive Do your 9 to 5 Act your age Then when you awaken Pray it's worth this breaking The radio singing I love you so But it isn't me they're talking to No love here Nowhere near More like servitude Empty noise From this unfinished boy Singing I want you to know my name Tell me how Can you leave me now Saying nothing changed Goodbye old man And all the understanding platitudes You leave me with The vicious nature of my mood My faith in you shaken Pray it's worth this breaking © 2005 Grayson/Connah YOUR FACE IS NOT ENOUGH I have gone to town on you and you have let it be I will not hold to love's old dream that I no longer need So you don't get me wrong I said "So long" Gone on to greener grass I kissed our lazy life goodbye And I'm so good to go that I think I'm about to cry Back in the early days Just your pretty face Had me believe in a god 10,000 nights ago What I didn't know Your face is not enough I am giving up the ghost and walking in my sleep The thing that we both feared the most is what has come to be Just so you heard me right I said goodnight I might be gone some time You know I might be gone for good If someone else says take my hand I kind of think that you should Back in the early days Just your pretty face Had me believe in a god 10,000 nights ago What I didn't know Your face is not enough I've been sent to save myself by climbing back upon the shelf I will not be the wallflower that blossoms at your finest hour I have gone to bed tonight I can sleep alone I won't be calling out your name It has really gone Just so you've got this straight It's way too late for this to be not broken in some fundamental way And when they ask me what went wrong this is what I will say Back in the early days Just your pretty face Had me believe in a god 10,000 nights ago What I didn't know Your face is not enough Your face is not enough Your face is not enough © 2005 Grayson/Connah |
